How to set allocation weights without chasing last week’s winner
Open your holdings list and sort by market value, not by the order the exchange shows coins. The top line is where concentration risk lives.
Write a provisional weight for each line as a percentage of the whole book including cash. If one name sits above a third of the total and you cannot explain why in one calm sentence, mark it for a trim band rather than a slogan about conviction.
Add a cash buffer sized for fees and one planned buy. Without cash on the sheet, every dip becomes a forced decision.
Finally, set a rebalance band — for example ±4 percentage points — so you are not adjusting daily. The goal of portfolio allocation for desktop users is a table you reopen next month, not a new theory every rainy evening.
